Shenhua, Sasol Boost China CTL Plan

Shenhua and Sasol have completed an indirect coal-to-liquids (CTL) plant feasibility study, upping the planned capacity to 93,000 barrels/day (b/d) rather than an initially planned 80,000 b/d.

According to a Reuters report quoting Zhang Yuzhuo, president and chief executive officer of Shenhua, Zhang said the project still “needs government approval” and he wouldn’t comment on when the plant would be built.

“If oil prices are like today – US$84 to $85 a barrel – [then] coal conversion projects can be very feasible,” Zhang was quoted as saying.

Having already built a direct coal liquefaction plant in Inner Mongolia, Shenhua Group now plans to produce more than 30 million tons of coal-derived liquids and chemicals in the next five years, Zhang was quoted as saying.

While CTL plants have been criticized for relatively high water consumption, Zhang said that the proposed Sasol-Shenhua CTL plant would consume far less water than other, equivalent industrial projects. – Jack Peckham
