W2 Energy announced July 22 that it has signed a term sheet with National Coal Corp. (NCC) to form Tennessee Clean Coal, LLC, a company which will initially build a one ton per day pilot plant to convert Tennessee coal into gasoline, ultra low sulfur diesel, JP8 jet fuel and electricity. For Tennessee Clean Coal, W2 will provide all of the technology and all of the financing; NCC will provide the land and the feedstock. In 2009 NCC sent a shipment of its bituminous coal to W2 for testing purposes. Using its NT Plasmatron low temperature gasifier, W2 successfully gasified the coal in three forms: powder form; mixed with water; and mixed with waste vegetable oil. In addition to producing liquid fuel and electricity, Tennessee Clean Coal will demonstrate that coal-based energy and power generation can be done more cleanly. W2 Energy's SunFilter Algae Reactor will sequester some or all of the greenhouse gases normally associated with coal-based power generation, the company said. Once Tennessee Clean Coal's first plant is proven and operational, the partnership will immediately begin planning for much larger plants that will provide substantial amounts of electricity and liquid fuel for the Tennessee economy.
