EIA predicts domestic CTL production to begin in 2011

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) recently released its Annual Energy Outlook 2009, which predicts that domestic production of coal-to-liquid (CTL) fuels will commence in 2011.

The outlook forecasts that production of domestic CTL fuels will increase annually by an average of 19 percent through 2030.  By 2030, EIA predicts that U.S. CTL production will stand at 300,000 barrels per day.

In addition, the outlook also predicted that 21 million tons of additional annual coal production will be needed by 2030 to support domestic CTL production.  According to the outlook, almost half of the coal production growth predicted for Western states will be needed for use in CTL production.

Senate Budget Committee Amendment Designed to Provide DOD with Domestic Alternative Fuels

The Senate Budget Committee last month unanimously approved a provision designed to create a funding plan to enable the Department of Defense to purchase domestically made alternative fuels, including coal-to-liquid fuels.  The amendment, offered by Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.), was approved as part of the committee's deliberations on the fiscal year 2010 budget.

"By creating a domestic fuels reserve fund, my amendment will make sure the Department of Defense has the ability to purchase a clean, cheap, and secure source of domestic fuel," said Bunning in a March 26 statement.

"As the price of oil once again starts to climb we need to provide a safety net for our military so that they will have a stable fuel supply regardless of the politics of oil."

Bunning said his amendment will "help create more jobs at a time when our economy is hurting and many Americans are struggling to find work."

He noted that the military is the largest single fuel purchaser in the country "and its support will help develop a domestic alternative fuel industry.

Become a CTL grassroots supporter

The Coal-to-Liquids Coalition is working to build a strong network of grassroots supporters willing to contact federal and state lawmakers to voice their support for measures meant to spur the domestic production of affordable, clean-burning CTL fuels.  CTL grassroots supporters can include company employees, union members, retirees, their families, friends and others spread across the country who share a personal stake in the successful launch of a domestic CTL industry.

A robust CTL grassroots network can be an invaluable tool in helping to increase the bipartisan support for legislation designed to jumpstart the production of ultra-clean CTL fuels.
