U.S. President Barack Obama’s “Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Task Force” is supposed to deliver a crucial report on August 3 proposing 5 to 10 “commercial demonstration” CCS projects that would go on-line by 2016 at U.S. coal-fired power plants.
With the deadline fast approaching, GE Energy gasification general manager Monte Atwell is now making the rounds among policy-makers and media urging that the Task Force mainly focus on the “S” part of CCS – especially for large, commercial-scale carbon dioxide (CO2) storage engineering studies, drilling, site selection and permitting.

The Province of Alberta and Swan Hills Synfuels are advancing a clean gas for clean power project that will dramatically reduce emissions by capturing and sequestering over 1.3 million tonnes per year of CO2. The province has executed a letter of intent with Swan Hills Synfuels to provide a $285M grant in support of this carbon capture and storage project.

Uhde and TransGas are working together on a 18,000 bbl/d Coal to Gasoline Project located in West Virginia, USA.
On the 25th February 2010 the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Air Quality, issued an Air Permit/Permit to Construct the facility.
This is a significant development as we believe this is the first gasification based project of this size that has been granted a "minor source" air permit.
The TransGas Project has two PRENFLOTM Gasifiers as its source of syngas.

The Associated Press recently reported that with Kentucky trying to land plants to convert coal to cleaner-burning fuels, the state is considering a proposal to extend eminent domain rights to pipeline companies that would transport liquefied carbon dioxide.
The AP reported on Feb. 11 that supporters of the proposal believe the measure will help give Kentucky an advantage in constructing coal-to-liquid fuel plants and could also help the state if federal regulators impose additional restrictions on carbon dioxide emissions.

Mantle Mining Corporation (Mantle) announced June 17 that it has been granted priority status over an application for Exploration License EL 5294 at the company’s 100 percent owned Bacchus Marsh Brown Coal project in Victoria.
Based on review of historic holes, including those drilled by CRA in the mid 1980’s, Mantle is of the view that EL 5294 could contain an exploration target of between 1 to 2 billion tons of brown coal. Sometimes the Ontario wind farms produce large amounts of electricity and sometimes they produce nearly nothing. In June 2010, in Ontario, the average output was 18.8% of their 1,100 MW capacity (data from the IESO website - http://www.ieso.ca/). The most output for any one hour was 746 MW (67.8% of capacity), and the least was 0 MW. There was a period of two hours where not one MW was recorded as being produced.

Sasol officials announced June 24 that recent expansions of shale-gas production in the United States and planned expansions elsewhere are lowering global natural-gas prices relative to oil, hence opening the door to further expansion of Fischer-Tropsch gas-to-liquids (GTL) fuels production.
"Recent technology developments in the cost-effective extraction of shale gas, and resulting lower global gas prices, present a significant opportunity for the expansion of our GTL value proposition," according to Sasol. "As a result, we intend to actively pursue growing our upstream gas reserves.

From his review of the scientific literature, Mr. Jevons cited (among other authorities) an English mineral surveyor named John Williams (The Limited Quantity of Coal in Britain, 1789) and a Scottish scientist named Robert Bald (A General View of the Coal Trade, 1812) who observed succinctly that continual increases in the consumption of finite commodities must eventually end in depletion.
